Intermittent ABS 700 1990

I have a 745 Wagon and the ABS light comes on once in a while indicating the system is inoprative. I've been told the relay(s) that run the system could be going bad. Is this common? Can relays be replaced individually, or does the entire (expensive) unit need to be replaced?

The car has had brake fluid replaced at least once a year since new. What are the most commonly replaced ABS parts on these cars besides sensors?
