Weird Trunk Strut Question 200

Bought new struts for the trunk of my 240DL sedan. I do not have the long easier to install struts like on the wagons. How do I remove the pin on the hinge end of it? Whack it hard with a mallet and punch? Once I get the pin out, I know I have to push the piston in and secure it somehow before I put it into position on the trunk hinge. I understand I can buy a special tool at Volvo (doesn't make sense since I plan on only doing this twice for the left and right strut). I also heard I can wrap it with wire to hold the piston down, then cut the wire once the strut is secured. I've tried to push that piston down on my work bench and it's not easy. Anyone have any hints for success here? Any tricks to make this go easier? I thought of using my vice, but it can't open wide enough to hold the strut. Help!!
