cold idle problem 700

I have an idle problem with a 1989 740 wagon. When the engine is cold it will not idle, and I have to give it the gas to get it started. After it has been started, and the engine reved a bit, it will idle poorly. After the engine warms up a bit the idle is much better, although not smooth. The tach says that the rpm's are fairly stable. The car seems to run well when driving, sometimes it seems to miss a little at cruising speed[or it may just be the stiff suspension encountering bumps in the road?]
I have not started throwing parts at it, e.g. wires, plugs etc. Wanted some diagnostic advice at its present condition.
