740 vs. 850 700 1988

I'm looking to buy a 740 or 850 for my wife to cart the kids around. (We have a 1988 740 GLE that I love but it's starting to show its age -- dead AC, headliner gone, etc. -- and I'm going to sell the Saturn wagon and put it toward another Volvo.) Besides price, what are the thoughts out there on getting a "newer" 740 vs. an older 850? Bottom line, which is safer and more reliable? Opinions, please. Thank you.
