overdrive problem? 200 1985

So I have a strange problem with my manual overdrive in a 1985 244 with 245,000 miles…..it will only engage with in the first mile after the car has been started for the first time….or when it sits for a few hours….and if you disengage it, it may or may not engage again. The OD relay clicks every time I push the 5 gear button. I have also replaced the OD lock-out switch, and cleaned and checked the fuses’. I have been trying to solve this problem for some time…any help or suggestions would be wonderful
