m46 gear shift seal...repalcement - how to... 700

my brothers m46 he has just had swapped out of his car needs anew seal around the gear shift entry..any tips (apparently this is a common failure point but i cant find any info in the FAQ) also any thoughts on if this could make the box feel 'stiff' - there is a debate going on if the box is totalled...or if this seal is the problem - the box was running quiet but stiff (he had a new clutch put in too...) but the oil leak is this seal and it was sitting in a ppol of oil apparently...
