seat belt retractor spring 700

Have had the traditional problem with driver's belt not retracting. The coil mechanism on my '86 740 does not look like the one I found on this site. Anyway, long story short, I have opened the wrong cover and the spring leapt out. The uncoiled spring took up a strange "S" shape which does not match the marks left inside the housing.
My Question: Is the spring simply rewound into the housing or is there some strange convoluted pattern that must be adopted? Thanks for any advice, Peter.
