Shift lever vibration 120-130

My shift lever vibrates rather a lot, and causes the knob to make a lot of noise. I've tried three different knobs, thinking the noise was something loose in the knob itself. I now have what I know to be a solid aluminum knob, and it's still noisy. I think now that the surfaces that are rubbing are at the base of the lever, just inside the boot.

How does the chrome lever attach to the steel piece that actually goes into the transmission? It spins, but doesn't seem to unscrew. Is there some sort of bushing in there that is supposed to reduce vibration?

Thanks-
Eric
