DOT 4 brake fluid? 200

I recently have bled the brakes on my 88 240DL. Habitually I just used the DOT 3 that I've always used on other vehicles. I just noticed in my Haynes manual that DOT 4 is the recommendation. I really don't even see DOT 4 for sale very much, and I don't see anything special about the Volvo brakes that would require the extra rating. I'm wondering if it is necessary to use DOT 4.
