Fan short cycles w/ AC on 900 1993

Took my 945 to a local Volvo mechanic because the AC seemed marginal on hot days last summer, the first summer that I owned it. He said the pressures were right where they should be, & the air was 40 something degrees. OAT was about 80 degrees. However he said that the rad cooling fan was short cycling which was controlled by the gray switch on the condensor he thought. Anyway, he said not to worry about it because it does cool so well. The trick is to leave it in recycle which I never have done in my cars. The fan comes on for a few seconds & then offfor 30-40sec. Water temp never changes. Is this really something that should be put off? Thanks
