Steering rack? 200 1984

I have a 1984 Volvo DL wagon. Recently whenever the steering wheel is turned lock to lock a muffled thunk is heard midway in turning the wheel. We had several visits to the local Volvo dealer and over time had the ball joints, boots and tie rods replaced. Add to this a front end alignment. This problem seemed to go away but now when backing up and turning the wheel a loud metallic clang is heard from up front. Also when driving out of the driveway and turning either left or right the same clang appears.

We took the car back to the local dealer and after keeping the car for the day they said they could not reproduce the noise and at "this time" everything was correct. Before I bring the Volvo back for another visit does anyone have a clue what might be causing this problem? I would like to find out what is causing this before there is a component failure while driving at speed.

Thanks in advance.
