Stripped an acorn nut on the coner of the valve cover near firewall... 200 1990

Gentlemen,
I was replacing the ground strap, which goes from the firewall to the valve cover, and semi-stripped the acorn nut. Who the hell uses cheesey acorn nuts as hold downs? Volvo, of course!
I am totally pissed off because some simple, bullshit project magnified itself by the power of two. I was able to remove the next acorn nut in line and connect the strap to a "new" location, but would like some help/advice regarding the removal of the stripped nut.
The nut is so close to the firewall I can not get a wrench on it, and my 10mm socket and super shorty extension does not work either. Any advice?
Thanks, Jon
