Hard pedal Intermittant brake failure 200 1986

After fixing a variety of electrical engine problems I took the car out for a test drive. About 15 minutes of neighborhood driving with lots of stop and go. At the next stop the pedal was hard but no braking at all. luckily slow enough to stop with emergency brake. Limping the two blocks home brakes would sometimes work and sometimes not. Never had a soft pedal, always hard pedal. Fluid level fine. Have not worked on brakes recently although car was garaged for about six months. What possible causes for such symptoms?

To all of those who have responded to my questions about electrical issues. Thanks loads. This self car repair can be a humbling experience.
