Rear axle and diff lock 700

I have just installed an auto box (ZF 4HP22) in my 745 1987 turbo diesel intercooler which previously had an M46 box. Now, they left the rear axle in as they could not locate a good one but they did say that it is leaking and that it appears worn and that it kloncks. So, I have a few questions:

1, How do I check the rear axle?
2, It is worth finding an axle with LSD or ALD and if so, which one is best and where will I find them. Info for Europe would be great.
3, I find that the revs are too high, it seems to change around 2600-2700 rpm and I used to change around perhaps 2000-2200. What difference would a rear axle with the higher ratio for auto boxes make? What ratio should I go for and what car would that be found in?
4, How do I make sure the speedo works fine? I now have the 12 teeth wheel and sensor.
