Upon replacing the hoodpin, I actually tried to see if I could get it to work WITHOUT the hood. In other words, I pushed it down into the hole to see if it would lock. It did. Then, I pulled the hood lock, and the thing popped out.

Natch, since the car is 20 years old, I would expect something like that cord to not be working too well.
