I have a standing deal at my Dealer for a Volvo crate motor (When Needed)for $2500.00. That is a remanufactured B230FT with a two year warranty. I have seen engine remanufactures offer the same motor for $2200 to $2400 with a one year warranty. Check out you local Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts for what they can get you a motor for. A used B230FT with less than 100K can be had for under $800
Try Erie Volvo in up state New York and see what they can get you a motor for.

That should help you find out what it will really cost to replace your motor.
You mechanic is probably figuring in 12 to 14 hours labor to replace it.
