Speaker adapter brackets 700 1990

I actually bought 2 pairs of Alpine speakers some time ago, 5.25" for the rear doors and 6.5" for the front doors, both coaxial 2-ways. Had them since the start of the year but haven't had time to figure out how I'm going to fit that 6.5" in the front door while using the factory speaker grille. The rear 5.25" looks like a drop-in replacement job which I assume will be quite straightforward.

Anyway, I just came up with an idea on fitting the 6.5" to the front doors, but not sure if it'll work, or if there's any hidden problems with it. Instead of mounting them in front on the door panel (well, the metal ring part at least), couldn't I mount the whole thing behind the door panel? Assuming the door panel is deep enough of course. That way the annoying metal ring will be behind the door panel and there'll be no trouble getting the factory speaker grilles back on.

Do you guys think that'll work? I'll remember to use silicon to make it air-tight, of course.
