Weird Electrical Problem ... 120-130

My experience is that the AC alt has two different places for outputs and that you need a small "bridging" wire (I think it acts as a ground). When I installed it the rebuild place said try both outputs one is good the other not, the not is the ground side and needs to have the bridging wire attached to it and a ground point on the alt body. does this make any sense? If not I guess I could go out in the rain and confirm.
