water pump 140-160 1974

My water pump is leaking in the 164E. It only leaks when the car is running. Some fluid will run and set on the pump until it evaporates. It isn't leaking large quanities. It isn't coming from the thermostat housing. I would assume the gasket is faulty. Is there anyway to know if the pump is leaking or just the gasket? A new pump will cost about $50. If I need to change the gasket should I just go ahead and get a new pump. The pump on there now is origional and is almost 30 years old. I plan on having this car for a while. Should I just change the pump while I have it all apart? I have never changed a water pump. How difficult of a job is this? It seems straight forward. Is there anything I should be aware of; or is there any wisdom anyone would like to impart who has changed a pump on a 164? Thanks a bunch.
