Wierd Timing Belt Failure 200 1981

Hi Folks,

My daughter's 1981 244 timing belt broke but it was unlike any break I have seen. The teeth around the crankshaft were broken off like the camshaft suddenly got stuck. I can turn the camshaft one way fairly easily but not in the opposite direction. I put a new belt on, but it jumped off of the camshaft after 1/2 of a rev. Did a valve drop? Help please
