Tailgate Lock Problem 900 1995

The tailgate of our 1998 940T is having lock problems. Today we couldn't get it unlocked with the key using the lock in the tailgate. We then tried using the front driver's door lock which unlocks all the locks and it still wouldn't open. After a few tries of locking and unlocking the driver's door the tailgate opened.

Is this a lubrication issue? Will squirting some lithium grease into the lock mechanism on the tailgate help? How greasing the bottom of the tailgate where it actually attaches to the car when closed?
