Air by pass?? 200

Hello all, My 85 240DL air bypass valve, if I start the engine and pull the rubber hose that conects bypass valve to the intake tube before the throttle plate, the engine stops running. Is this the norm? If I leave it alone the engine runs.
Being that, it is taking air before the throttle plate, and rerouting it passed the throttle plate. Should'nt matter whether that hose is hooked up to the plastic intake tube,or not? What am I not getting or seeing? Wish I could word this better. Can any one explain why this happends? THANKS!!
