Proper Front Brake Pads Should Be Slotted??? 140-160

Greetings All!
First off--ignore that prior message-heading under my name;
I was noodling on the keyboard and pressed the wrong button.
Now--about 164 front brake pads; to be factory correct, are
the pads supposed to have one or more 'flex-slots' milled into
the face? The purpose would be to accomodate uneven extension of
the dual pistons acting on each pad. Seems like a good idea in
theory. However, very few of the aftermarket pads I've purchased
over the years had the slots; even the much bally-hooed
Repco/PBR units don't. Are genuine dealer pads currently slotted?
Is it of any real importance?
Also, why are the '71 front rotors (#687308) unique to that
year alone? '69-'70 use a different rotor, but still a solid type.
'72 switches to the vented style. So what's with '71?
All info appreciated.

Gary in Arizona--with two 164's.
