I don't have a pic or a digital camera but I have added a '86 hi-level brake light to an '81 tailgate ('81 was rust-free)... I think you will have to find an '86 tailgate from the junk yard to get a few parts: specifically two mounts and I think you might need the light assembly from a wagon because the black plastic casing around the light is molded to fit on the interior metal of a tailgate.
on the '86 wagon there are two small plastic pieces of hardware that I epoxied onto the inside glass of the new tailgate (after removing them from the '86 tailgate with a razor blade).
I tried to copy the pattern of the black masking that the '86 had on it's glass so I could then use some black paint to try to make it look close to the same. Another method would have been to replace the glass using the glass from the '86 and placing it in the opening of the usable tailgate - advantage is you don't have to line up the mask or the mounts...I'm not sure if the glass fits exactly but I'd put money on it fitting.
With epoxied mounts on the new glass (behind the black mask if you choose to add that) you can then slide the light onto the mounts easily, pop the black plastic cover on the assembly and wire it up.
the trick in all of this was lining up the mask and the mounts ... I used the light assembly (complete) placed on the inside of the wagon's gate (as close to center as possible) to make some marks on the glass for alignment of everything... I used a paper cutout of the mask to apply the paint...
the only other thing I can think of which is probably obvious is I drilled a hole through the center of the tailgate (directly under where the light assembly will be mounted - use the '86 gate to see where I mean) in order for the wires to go through. So far it's working great, the paint job is a little scratchy from where I tried to rough up the surface of the glass a bit to help the paint hold...
let me know if you don't get all your questions answered.
