handbrake went 'ping!' - help 700

940 GLE B234F '91 ('92 canadian)

I was pulling (somewhat hard) on the handbrake to lock up the car before jacking up the front end. The lever went "PING!" and is now totally and completely loose... no more connection to the brakes.

The clicking on the handle still works, so does the push button lock, only the brake connection is lost. There is very little resistance. It rises well above the normal position.

Anything common that can brake? Should I just go ahead and order the cable? Is it one cable or two? At which point does the cable usually brake? Big job to change?

Thanks,
