Intank fuel pump question/Do all 240's stall? 200 1989

I'm the new owner of a 240DL wagon with 138k.
I'm trying to ID the source of my occasional rough idle/stall problem. Most all of the time it runs great...it always runs good when you are giving it gas.

I've got a list of things to rule out/check. One is the intank fuel pump. I cannot seem to hear it running. I'm wondering how loud should it be? Will this be obvious if it is running? I guess there's some other ways to confirm that this is not working, but Bentley manual says to first try to listen. Fuses are fine.

I'm new to this stuff, so any advice would be appreciated.

Another question. Is there any place where the most common problems for the 240 series are documented concisely?
