240 Tie Rod Install 200 1991

Hey all,

I recently did an inner tie rod replacement on my 91 240. In removing the old one, I notied that there was almost like a notch or piece of grinded metal between the steering rack and old tie rod. I went and looked up instructions from a different source when I was done, and found a few sites that said "de-form the metal between the two", but didnt say what it was for, or what would happen if I didnt do it. If this is absolutely necessary, any ideas on what the best way to do it is, and what exactly I'm aiming to do with the metal? Thanks in advance.

Dan
