BRAKE FAILURE light on, but Brakes ok? 200 1986

This morning when I started my wagon to go to work, the BRAKE FAILURE light didn't go out after the engine started. I checked the fluid level and it looked good. I applied the brakes a few times and they seemed firm. I drove around the block, stopping deliberately several times and things seemed good. So I went to work.

In the past whenever I had brake problems, I knew it well in advance of the idiot light comming on. So I'm guessing that the brakes are OK and the sensor mechanism is malfunctioning.

Does this seem reasonable? Or could there be something wrong that I'm not detecting?

I'm going to check my shop manuals when I get home, but what could cause this light to come on incorrectly?

thanks!
