rear end froze on highway going 70mph.. almost crashed... advice needed please 700 1988

Hey gang, so as I was travelling on the highway, I noticed a vibration, then a loud bang, then the rear wheels locked up and I skidded about 50 yards to a stop. The car will not move forward at all. I was pretty lucky no one was driving behind me, or that I didn't go over the enbankment. The tires melted nicely where they contacted the road. I'm still a little shaky as I write this.

AT any rate, I'm kind of wondering the cause of this mishap... and for advice.

WHen we were taking the car off the flatbed, it actually rolled for about 5 feet, then locked up again. This seemed strange.

SO, what do you think happened? broken rear axle? Blown differential?

ANy advice at this point would be incredibly well appreciated...
How much for a used differential? axle? etc. How difficult a job is replacing the differential?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
