B28F Cams 200 1980

About mid 1980 the problem was rectified in the B28F. The 1981 cars did not have near the problems the 1980 cars did, but alas the reputation was ruined by the 77-79 B27F, and the early B28F. My 1981 262C Bertone ran like a champ when I sold it at 190K miles. It was less than 200 serial numbers from the last 262 built.

Volvo designed and built the heads for the PRV variant used in Volvo cars. The real fix came when Volvo (yes it was Volvo's fault, not the bloody French) opened the oil passages up a bit. Although the cam was somewhat hardened as a fix, I think there was a batch that somehow got out that didn't meet the hardness specification or were at the very low end of the spec. A deadly bad combination from out of a car company trying sell reliability.

If I had one now and it went south, I wouldn't bother opening it up. V8 or L4 Turbo. The PRV is just not worth the hassle for the tiny output for a V6.

Lastly the 1992 Swedishbricks posted by joe is OK in tone (a bit paranoid) but is factually as wrong now as it was in 1992. I remember reading it way back. The one guy didn't now crap about oil - with this engine increasing oil viscosity is just wrong. If someone wants to keep one going (or goes through the hassle of fixing one) use a good synthetic oil no more than an SAE 10W-30 to keep the oil flowing as quickly and as much as possible.
