Clunk Solved! -- Bad sway bar link (brand new!) 900 1997

the clunk was due to a relatively new swaybar link I installed a month ago. The link (for the newer 960's) which has little balljoint like ends went bad at one end and was the source of the clunking.

I will ask FCP for a replacement/refund on Monday.
