AC noise 200

The air conditioner on my recently purchased 1992 245 wagon makes an irritating noise when running, at least compared to my 1985 244. When I first turn the AC on, the noise isn't noticable but after a few momemts a noise that I can best describe as a somewhat loud whirling sound is present. I don't think I'm being too picky; the noise is excessive. As soon as I switch the AC button off, the noise stops. The AC on my 85 isn't as noisy although it was installed after I bought the car (new) and it might not be a Volvo unit.

Is this noise normal for Volvos or is there a possible problem? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the noise. Thanks in advance!
