Refrigerant leak in air cinditioning - what to do now 700 1989

I believe that my refrigeran has leaked from my air conditioner. My mechanic indicates that it will cost about $800.00 to retrofit my air conditioner to new r134. Is ther a lower cost and relaible alternative? I see r12 replacement coolants advertised on the internet. One is called Red Tek. is this an alternative?
