Fault codes 900 1995

Hello guys, recently bought a 95 960 3ltr estate and like a child with a new toy i'm checking out all of the bits and pieces. I have noticed that many comments refer to reading and checking fault codes, do I need a special tool or equipment to do this or is it done in a garage. look forward to your comments.
