how is the gear shift stick removed? I want to insert the foam donut for noise control 200

'82 245 with manuel(o.d.). I want to insert the noise insulating foam pad between the tranny and the top of the tunnel. I am changing my support bearing so the driveshaft will be out. I was wondering if it's possible to remove the stick shift at this point so that I could lower the tranny a bit and get the foam donut in. I don't have any diagrams of the stick and it's attachment mech., any and all input welcome, Thankx patrick.
