A/C Help Needed

I have a 1993 Volvo 240 Sedan, the A/C does not work after the car has sat out in the sun, when the inside and outside is hot. The A/C is working fine in the morning or a night when the sun is not baking on it. It will not let the compressor come on when the temperature outside or the car is hot, weather not running hot. I have taken it to the dealship and mechanics without success. Please help, hot here on the North Carolina Coast.... Kay
