Looking at a 122S...help!? 120-130

Being a Volvo owner for years I have found a 122S that's for sale. I have had 4 240's, wagons 4 doors and just recently sold a 242 turbo. My wife drive a 960 wagon. I know nothing about this car. What does the S mean? The car looks to have belonged to someone that kept it in a garge and it was bought and driven for a few years and then parked. the inspection sticker shows the last update in 96. Has a 4 speed and dual carbs. the only rust is very very minor. The only thing that bothers me is that the steering column looks to have had a slight fire. The cover is charred and disfugured from obvious heat, located right in the area where the turn signal handle comes out about 11 o'clock. I don't even know the year number. Any help on this would be appreciated. And yes I can replace the blower motor on a 240, what a crappy design!
