New project: '87 240 wagon with engine issues and noises. 200 1987

Bought '87 240 wagon as new project car. Body very good. Brakes, front end and transmission also fine. Engine (with 242k) not so fine. Car was parked for a while with "stalling" problems. I replaced the plugs, cap and rotor, fuel pump relay, and checked fuses, etc. before starting for home. The engine still seemed to miss on one cylinder and has a distinct metallic clacking sound when revved-up, or accelerating. Goes away on level or downhill driving. By removing each plug wire in turn, I found that No.3 cylinder looks like the culprit. Runs the same with plug wire detached, and the knocking is gone when revving the engine. Can this engine be saved? Words of wisdom will be welcomed.
