Tapetty, tapetty etc. 200

Approaching 300K my '80 DL has been getting increasingly noisy in the engine compartment. When cold the engine continuously taps until it is thoroughly warmed up (about 15 mins running time), then moderates. Sounds like what I always believed to be valve noise although I am not versed enough to know what the cause might be. I haven't had any adjustments made since about 60K. So, what are the possibilities? What is your best troubleshooting advice. Are there fixes I can attempt? I'm not an engine man but have done timing belts, engine seals, drive shaft work etc. I'm a little nervous about tackling areas I know nothing about or can cause real problems if mishandled. Thank you all for past suggestions to other problems (and I've got a couple more saved up for the future).
