B230FT/M46 intermittent stumble/stall 700 1987

Just picked up this very nice 188k mile car.

Or at least I thought it was nice.

Had an idle problem which was solved by a TB cleaning.

Now it has developed an intermittent stumble/stall which is most disconcerting.

Preliminary diagnosis: fuel problem.

1] happens at idle, under load, cruise or coast.

2] FP relay is getting too hot to touch. Replaced with known good - no change.

3] tank 3/4 full. removal of pre-pump fuse worsens problem.

4] fuel filter appears new. However, car sat for 1+ years before I purchased it.

Current suspicions:

a] failing main pump. Never really seen an intermittent failure on an LH-Jet pump. Is it possible/likely?

b] intermittent crud blockage of fuel filter (or elsewhere in the system). Have dosed system with Techron twice.

Thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated.

Evan
