Warped/bent caliper?- girling with abs 700

1990 740 with new style girling-ABS

Recently doing front brakes again, and I could not get the caliper to go over the new pads! These are the correct pads, (same parts from same place as last time-Autozone). The drivers went on okay, but the passenger side would not.

It appears that the outboard side of the caliper, opposite pistons, it getting caught on edge of pads.

The pistons are fully retracted and I can see space between them and the pad inboard. I usually would just loosen top bolt, and remove bottom bolt, and flip up the bottom, and replace pads.

It worked okay on drivers side, but even taking off caliper completely I could not get it to fit right. The caliper would fit over the pads, but not line up with the boltholes!

Could I have a bent caliper or mount, or am I getting old enough to start forgetting things I should remember?

thanks for any help
jc
