Hello, unless you've worked with the internals of an instrument cluster, you probably can't help.
For those of you who have, my odometer quit working shortly after I reached 200,000 miles in my 86 745 gle. I've finally tried fixing it by getting one of the gears that usually fails from a junk yard speedometer unit (from a 240 actually). Well, at first it seemed like I had not fixed the odometer, and had broken the odometer because neither worked when I put it back in the car. But I remembered a weird connection on the speedo that is made by sandwiching the pcb board on the speedo between a folded piece of cable on the back of the cluster. I made sure that the cable folded around the connection correctly, and then my odometer worked, but still not the speedometer. Then I put in a cluster I got at a pick and pull for a 83 760 gle and put it in. But this time, both the odometer and speedometer didn't work. All other instruments work great. The only reason I can see is there was a 4 wire connector on the 760's cluster that I couldn't find a corresponding connection on my car.
On my original speedometer, I did have trouble removing the needle, and did bend the shaft, but I unbent it as best as I could. The speedo needle moves freely from 0-120. Is there some internal connection that I failed to make like with the odometer the first try? How can I test the speedometer, put 12v to it somewhere? What reason can you guys think of for the odometer to work, but not the speedometer?? My speed sensor must be good if the odometer works. I took good notes when I removed my speedo, I don't think I'm missing any wires.
I put a picture up on my website. It's called speedo0001.bmp located in the http://www.volvosmith.net/images .
Thanks for any help anyone can give,
Nathan
