A better shop manual? 200 1988

Bentleys is an excellent manual.
Before worrying about removing shims etc why not just check the clearances, it is quite likely that they are within spec and need no adjustment. Adjustment just consists of inserting a new shim of different thickness after doing the math.

There is not a lot you can work on to improve the FI system unless you have a fault. Clean the throttle body, check for air and vacume leaks, check O2 output, check throttle position switch adjustment, set base idle and mixture. No special tools needed just a Digital meter.
