Volvo Money Pit - Concerned about the Engine -- Need Advice... 200

I have put a lot of money into my 86 volvo wagan. The lastest thing was a used transmission among a million other new parts. My odometer stopped at 168,000 miles. I speculate that I have about 189,000 plus miles. I know this is a wierd question, but now I am concerned about the remaining life of the engine. What are some things that I can do to preserve the engine? Are Volvos known for their engines? When the engines goes bad what are the warning signs?
