I have an 1988 740 5 Speed with 200,000 miles. Recently, I noticed a noise coming from what seems the transmission/clutch area. The noise sounds like a sewing machine clickety-clack. Here are the circumstances under which the noise occurs.
I first noticed the clickety-clack when coasting to stop lights in first gear with the clutch engaged. After some tests, it seems that the noise occurs in all gears when coasting to a stop as long as the clutch is engaged and the transmission is kept in gear. The noise is loudest in first gear and decreases in volume with each gear and is barely audible in fourth and fifth gear. If I come to a stop with the transmission in gear, but without putting in the clutch, I don’t hear much, if any, noise.
The clickety-clack can also be heard when the car is IDLING and STATIONARY and the transmission is in neutral (however, when I press the clutch in, the noise gradually goes away, and within 5 seconds or so can’t be heard at all).
If I am in NEUTRAL and turn the engine OFF, then coast to a stop, the noise isn’t present.
The clickety-clack noise has gradually become louder over the past week and a half. About a week ago, I had the transmission fluid checked; it was completely full and looked clean. Apart from this sewing machine clickety clack, the car runs fine, and doesn’t make excessive noise when under power on the highway.
Does anyone out there have an idea as to what these symptoms suggest? Is my transmission about to go? Do the symptoms point to a specific problem within the transmission or is it a clutch problem?
If the transmission is a problem, does anyone have any recommendations as to a fix? I have talked to a few people who suggest that if the transmission is shot, I should get it rebuilt or switched out for a transmission with fewer miles. However, a mechanic at AAMCO thought that the transmission didn’t sound completely done for and a new bearing kit could be all I need. Is the AAMCO guy just trying to get me in the door with a "cheap fix" come on?
If anyone has experience with this problem, I would certainly be grateful for any advice.
Thanks.
