Continued high hard pedal 200 1986

I'm still puzzled by the ocaisional high hard brake pedal I'm getting in my 86 240. I have to drive around using the brkes for 5 to 10 minutes before the situation reoccurs. Last time I pulled back into the yard and pulled the check valve at the booster. Sudden escape of air indicates the booster was holding pressure. Started engine and had vacuum in the hose to the booster. Reattached hose and high hard pedal was gone again. I've ordered a new check valve in case it is a intermittant problem with it or the seal. Any one heard of booster going bad only on an intermittant basis?
