Warning lights all flashing because...... 200 1990

they are getting a ground connection when that should not happen - namely when the engine is running.

What I am thinking will be wrong if your oil light is flashing with the rest of them. Is it?

Assuming it is not, here's my idea:

The warning lights, except the oil pressure light, get grounded through the alternator brushes. When the engine is running, the ground is lost so the lights go out.

But if the wire connecting the lights to the alternator gets a ground someplace else, the lights come on. That's what you are probably getting. The 1990 models were made with real insulation on the main harness, so that problem is not the cause.

Chances are that the harness running under the front of the engine has a problem. That location is quite hostile, what with oily stuff, grit, lots of heat, etc. The harness is held in place by metal tabs that start out life with a rubber coating. Once that wears off, the metal can then chafe into the harness cover and into a nearby wire. If that wire is the thin red wire to the alternator, you get the flickering warning lights.

If the wire that gets chafed into is the fat red wire, you get a fire. The fat wire is alswys hot, direct to the battery.

If the lights stay on a long enough time, the battery charge will drop off. That thin red wire carries the current that excites the alternator field windings and when that current isn't there the alternator cannot charge.

So you'll need to get under, take off the gravel shield, and look at the harness. There is an easy re-hab, do a search on my posts and check for a recent one on "new alternator won't charge".

Good Luck,

Bob
