Window tint removal? 200 1988

I've got the dark factory purple tint on my rear windows, and the rear windshield is starting to look really bubbly. It's not very safe. I'd like to remove the windshield but I'm afraid if I take a razor to it the defogger will come off as well. Has anybody done this, and can you recommend a good way to do it? Are there solvents that I could use that would make removal easy?
