Run-of-the-mill loss-of-power mystery problem, but with a funny smell thrown in 200 1988

This problem is not very exciting or glamorous, but should be a challenge to solve, especially if you like to diagnose smells and sounds over the internet. I, for one, am at my wits end; but that's not saying very much.
I have tried to be thorough and specific, so it's a bit long. Apologies.

This is what is happening:

* Loss of power while driving in forward gears (reverse seems fine, I think).
* Upon shifting, full power is momentarily restored, but then lost again.
* I am able to limp home-the vehicle is drivable.
* Problem is intermittent--it does not happen every time the vehicle is driven.
* The vehicle idles fine during and occurrence and seems to rev smoothly when in neutral
* A mild sort of "heat" stink accompanies this occurrence. It is not overpowering. I know a smell for temperature is crazy, but I can't describe the smell any other way. Perhaps it is vaguely electrical in odor, but it is not horrible smelling like burning polymers, or the like. The engine is not overheating, however.

What I have done so far:

* Replaced the in-tank fuel pump and sending unit due to the fact that I was having trouble starting the car below 1/4 tank of fuel. The electrical feed through on the sending unit had corroded into solid copper oxide.
* I posted this problem a few months ago. A fellow brick poster indicated that he was having the same problem, but the vehicle was fine when driven in reverse while the problem was occurring. He said that there was a loose connection on his AMM that solved his problem. I checked my AMM. There did seem to be a loose-but by no means disconnected connection (the no. 1 wire). I pushed it securely in place.
* I also performed the tests listed in the Bentley Manual for the AMM, even though I don't know my AMM model. It says Bosch and has 0_280_212_007 stamped on its face. Here are my test results using the Fluke:

-AMM Pt wire resistance: 2.8 ohms (2.5-4.0 Ohms for LH2.4 & 3.5-4.0 Ohms for LH2.0/2.2)
-Idle mixture potentiometer: 388.6 Ohms (0-1000 Ohms for LH2.0/2.2)
-Burn off Function: test positive-meter deflected.
-I did not play with the idle mixture adjuster.


Other items of note:

* This vehicle is kept in good running order, and maintenance is performed at regular and proper intervals.
* The vehicle is used primarily for local (~75 miles/wk.), so every time the problem presents itself, its only been after a few miles of driving.
