'87 245 No Start 200

A family member's '87 240 w/5 speed manual tranny wagon with 220k miles no longer wants to start. In 12 years of ownership the car has never had a problem like this. The car just got back from the mechanic who was trying to locate a clicking sound coming from the right front wheel(he didn't find anything). It ran normally for a day but then it started stumbling under acceleration like it wasn't getting any fuel. Under acceleration it will jerk and it higher gears it is worse. Sometimes it feels like it isn't running on all 4 cylinders. White colored smoke is coming out of the exhaust in 70 degree weather and it smells strongly of gasoline. No smell of coolant. Can't find any coolant in the oil or oil in the overflow tank. Now the car is at the mechanic and he informed us that the car will no longer start. Not being a 240 person I haven't a clue about this. Any suggestions as to what we're dealing with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!!
